The Diploma of Mental Health is a nationally-recognised qualification that equips workers with the skills and knowledge to provide support to people with mental illness. The diploma covers a range of topics, including mental health assessment, counselling, referral and crisis intervention.
To be eligible for the diploma of mental health, you will need to be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident; be at least 18 years of age; have completed Year 12 or equivalent or an AQF Certificate IV in Mental Health; and pass an online LLN assessment test. You will also need to have – or obtain – a current Working with Children check and Police check.
Your course covers advocacy, working with diverse and Indigenous communities, and establishing recovery-focused relationships. You will learn to offer recovery-oriented services, manage cases involving both mental health and substance use, and implement early interventions. Training includes assessing clients' overall wellbeing, creating personalised wellness plans, and applying trauma-informed care. Additionally, students will gain skills in research, evidence-based practice, and professional development. The program emphasises workplace safety, crisis response, stress management, and building effective community networks, preparing students for impactful roles in mental health support.
The Diploma of Mental Health can be completed in 12 months part-time, depending on your study schedule.
